(NC)-The desire to be thinner can lead to extreme weight control behaviour in girls and young women. Girls with type I diabetes mellitus (DM) appear to be at risk for disturbed eating. Dr. Gary M. Rodin, and colleagues at the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children, will study 120 adolescent girls with DM for 3 years, to assess their eating attitudes and behaviour, family functioning, and medical status. The goal is to learn about eating disturbances in this group and identify risk factors for early warning signs in order to design an intervention to prevent the development of eating disturbances in a younger group.
Dr. Rodin’s research is being funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). CIHR is Canada’s preeminent health research catalyst and is funded by the government of Canada. An exciting new concept, CIHR is modernizing and transforming the health research enterprise in Canada.

Long-term weight loss isn’t impossible, but you do have to be committed. Having a weight loss plan for your success is a good start. Here are ten items that should go into your weight loss plan.
1. Eat breakfast. This keeps you from getting too hungry later and then losing control over what you choose to eat later in the day.
2. Stock your refrigerator and pantry with healthy foods and snacks and limit high-fat, high-salt snacks such as potato chips and cookies.
3. Fill up on Fiber. Eat foods like fruits, vegetables and whole grains. The fibers in these foods will fill you up leaving less room for unhealthy choices.
4. Don’t fall into bad habits on weekends. Many people will follow a strict diet on weekends only to fall back into eating more (unhealthy) on the weekends as a reward for “being good” all week. Unfortunately, this can cause you to regain tahe weight you may have lost during the week.
5. Watch portion sizes. Your perception of what a serving size should be and a “true” serving size can differ dramatically. Measuare your portions accurately, especially when you first start your healthy eating regime.
6. Set lifestyle goals – not weight loss goals. Commitment to eating healthy foods does lead to healthy weight loss — gradually. Looking at your weight daily can cause discouragement and will make many people give up and go back to unhealthy food choices.
7. Take healthy snacks with you when you take road trips. Grab healthy granola bars, bananas, apples and other fruit to prevent the tempation of stopping for a cancy bar or milk shake.
8. Don’t deny yourself the foods you love. If you absolutely love chocolate, go ahead and have a small pice – half of a candy bar insteaad of a whole one! And avoid eating your “splurges” every day. Save them for when you really need them!
9. Start moving. Exercise is the key to long term weight loss. You’ve heard the saying, “Move it or lose it.” Too true!
10. Keep a journal. Writing down what you eat, when and how much you exercise and your moods will keep you on track and motivated to continue the course.
Weight loss is achieved by both diet and exercise. It is also achieved by persistence. If you “fall off the wagon” one day, pick yourself up and continue your healthy lifestyle the next. Don’t give up!

A Walk With Your Dog

You have decided to start a fitness routine that involves both you and your dog. That’s great! And it’s great for both you and your dog as you will both benefit from the walk, the fresh air, the exercise, and the opportunity to poop in the neighbor’s yard. Well, okay, maybe that last one should be limited to the dog, but it does bring up an important point when you are walking with your dog. That is, your dog has a different agenda on the walk than you do.
You want to walk to lose weight, lower your cholesterol, improve your circulation or any number of other reasons that all have to do with your health. These are all good reasons for getting off the couch and walking. Your dog will share your enthusiasm for the walk. When you go though your routine of getting ready for the walk, your dog will become more excited and animated in anticipation of a walk with you. But for entirely different reasons.
As you leave your home for your walk your dog will be pulling on his leash, anxious to get into the neighborhood. His tail will be held high, which means something to the dog, and it is very possible that his nose will be scanning the ground as you walk. The dog’s nose is a very sensitive organ and we humans have learned to put the dog’s nose to work for us. Humans have yet to build a machine that is half as sensitive as a dog’s nose. Your dog is just a family pet, not trained to hunt for criminals or lost skiers. Nevertheless, he still has that nose and he wants to put it to good use. Your walk is his opportunity to do that.
You may notice that some dogs take their duties, as dogs, more seriously than others. A dog from a working breed may give some passing attention to the various scents that fill the air near ground level. For a dog like this it is more in the nature of reading the morning paper. A dog from a hunting breed, on the other hand, will study a scent in great detail. For this kind of dog it is more in the nature of a technical journal that must be scrupulously examined and analyzed. There is far more information in the scent that your dog is sniffing at that we, as humans, will ever know.
What this means to you is that a walk with your dog will not be undertaken at a consistent speed or pace and may involve numerous stops, especially in those areas where other dogs are known to pass. This is where your agenda will be different from your dog’s. Using an extending leash can help to reduce the disparity between your pace and your dog’s.
But this is not a bad thing. Walking your dog is still good exercise. In fact, studies indicate that even moderate exercise, like you might get by walking with your dog, can significantly reduce a man’s risk of heart attack and the benefit is even greater for a woman. In addition, your dog will prove to be a great motivator. Dog’s are creatures of habit and when your dog starts walking with you he will quickly develop that habit. On those days when you just don’t feel like walking, your dog will, and he will let you know that, no matter how you feel, he still wants to go for that walk.
So, before you start a new exercise routine go talk to your doctor. Then talk to your dog. Everyone will agree that a daily walk will be a good thing to pursue.
One last thing. Another habit to build, besides the walk itself, is to take one of those plastic grocery bags with you on your walk. Your dog will not have any inhibitions about defecating in your neighbor’s lawn. “When ya gotta go, ya gotta go.” Should you dog do something indiscreet clean it up using the plastic grocery bag and maybe a garden trowel. That is what a good neighbor does as well as a responsible dog owner.

As adults with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), we often find ourselves excited by new ideas and plans, but overwhelmed by what it will take to reach the goals.
Many of my coaching clients find themselves in this situation. They make a decision to make a change – a big change. Sometimes it’s about moving up in the world, like finding a new and better home. Sometimes the change is about pursing a dream, like taking a passion for art and turning it into a career. And sometimes the change involves a mental shift to become a better person, like learning to overcome anger.
No matter what big and exciting change is on the horizon, we can sometimes find that our impulsivity has us not only wanting – but expecting – the change to happen much quicker than is actually possibly. We have unrealistic expectations of what we are able to accomplish when. When this happens, disappointment, lack of motivation, and even feelings of failure, are quite common.
When one of my clients finds them self in a situation like this, I take them through a visualization exercise that I call “The Temple.” The following directions will allow you to use this exercise in your own life.
The Temple: A Visualization Exercise
Step 1: Pick the Goal
Pick a goal that you are excited about – a change you really want to make.
Step 2: Relax
Sit back, relax, and close your eyes. Focus on your breath going in and out, and allow worries and concerns to be breathed away…just for a little bit.
Step 3: Visualize a Temple
Create – in your mind – the vision of a beautiful, peaceful temple. It is your temple, and it can be anywhere. It can look any way you like. Get a very vivid image of this temple in your mind.
The temple is your goal. When you reach your goal, you will reach your temple.
Connect with your goal. What will it feel like when you reach that goal? Think of the emotions you will experience. Think about what it will feel like to be in that temple.
Step 4: Visualize Your Steps
Now imagine that your temple is being raised into the sky. As your temple rises, stairs appear. The stairs to your temple are steps to your goal.
Ask yourself, what are the steps that I need to climb in order to reach my goal? What has to happen in order for me to reach that goal?
Are there any steps on the way to your goal that you have already achieved? If so, visualize yourself climbing the stairs to your temple.
Step 5: Check-in With Yourself
Do this exercise on a regular basis. Each time you take a step towards your goal, visualize yourself climbing a stair to your temple.
Understand that some steps will be easy to climb, and some will be a little harder and will take more time. Even though it may seem like you’ve been working a long time and not getting anywhere on your goal, don’t lose sight of the fact that if you are climbing the stairs, then you are making progress.
When you get impatient and frustrated about your progress, remember that life in itself is a journey. Growth and personal progress don’t happen in the temple, they happen on the way to the temple.

It was a worldwide day of reckoning. On September 11, 2001, the entire world became a witness to the darkest evil as well as the highest good that man was capable of doing. On that day, it was as if time had stopped and everyting stood at a standstill. It was a time when most people began to ponder about their lives and how they lived, individually and collectively as human beings.
Amidst the concrete rubble and stench of death, people from all walks of life came together to lend each other a hand. Each came to bring their skills to save the trapped and wounded; all worked together with a heart that wanted to provide comfort in a time of great crisis for the people of New York and the rest of the United States. Yet the cries of shock and protest against that act of terrorism resounded from different countries around the globe. It was a defining moment in modern history, a turning point in the on-going war against terror.
Reminiscent of the horrors of the holocaust during World War II, and the devastation wrought by the atomic bomb in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the events of 9/11 has been recorded as one of the most destructive man-made disasters of the 21st century.
Surely, even relatively smaller scale incidents produce the same kind of gried and sense of loss. Day after day, other tragedies happen to people around the world, around the clock. Vehicular accidents, kidnappings, robberies, rapes, hurricanes and other natural disasters all bring death and destruction.
The tragic 9/11 bombings of the World Trade Center generated extensive media coverage worlwide. Millions of viewers who are not really closely related to any of the victims felt a great sense of loss, fear, anger, surprise, shock and disbelief.
Those who escaped and survived the collapse of the World Trade Center bore scars on their body and within themselves. Many of the survivors, including their families now suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). This is a type of anxiety disorder is acquired when an individual’s undergoes a life-threatening experience or a very traumatic event. Those with PTSD have an anxiety attack whenever they remember the traumatic incident. Some of of the symptoms of PTSD include having a feeling of history repeating itself; sleep problems like insomia; nightmares; a feeling of isolation; agitation or irritability; and even guilt.
Many PTSD sufferers report that they always feel and think that the tragic event is happening all over again. These painful memories are called flashbacks and may consist of images, sounds, smells, or feelings that can be triggered by even the most ordinary things. A person having a flashback may lose touch with reality and believe that the traumatic incident is happening all over again. The anxiety can be very distressing and could lead to another panic attack. PTSD usually occurs about three weeks after the traumatic incident. In some cases, signs of PTSD may be delayed and would only start to appear after a couple of years later.
Insomia or having some troubles getting sleep may be caused by worrying or unresolved feelings about the tragic event. Nightmares may be about the same traumatic experience or it could be anything that is frightening and threatening to the person. Survivors of the 9/11 terrorist attack may even develop a feeling of isolation characterized by not feeling close to people. It is similar to socio phobia in the sense that there is fear in being with strangers, and sometimes, even with their own loved ones. People experiencing PTSD are highly irritable and get angry even at the slightest provocation. Guilt haunts people with PTSD. They feel guilty about surviving the tragedy while others did not. They feel irrational guilt that they could have done something for others who were in the same tragedy, or blame themselves for being the cause of the incident or accident.
Anti-anxiety medications may help people with PTSD feel less afraid and tense. It may take weeks before they experience its full medical benefits. Consulting with health care specialists and counselor for therapy may greatly help.
It is important that we keep family ties and other relationships tight. We need to surround ourselves with people who will always be there to reassure us, affirm us and comfort us in times of life’s great challenges. People suffering from PTSD need a lot of reassurance, comfort, and encouragement. There are no daily pills to remember, no IUD strings to check, diaphragms or cervical caps to worry about inserting into the proper position — all you have to do to achieve effective contraception.
Depo-Provera stops the ovaries from releasing eggs. It causes the cervical mucus to thicken and changes the uterine lining, making it harder for sperm to enter or survive in the uterus. These changes prevent fertilization. Depo Provera is a very private form of birth control because it cannot be seen on the body and requires no home supplies. It does, however, require a clinic appointment every 3 months. Depo-Provera, otherwise known as birth control shot is a birth control method for women. It is made up of a hormone similar to progesterone and is given as a shot by a doctor into the woman’s arm or buttocks. It is important to keep in mind that it takes two weeks for the birth control shot to work effectively, so it is advisable to alternate birth control methods, such as using condoms, when receiving the Depo-Provera injection every month.
However, due to the risk of serious health problems, women with unexplained vaginal bleeding or there is a suspected pregnancy, are not recommended to use Depo Provera. It may not also be recommended for women who are planning on becoming pregnant in the near future, are concerned about weight gain, have liver disease, gallbladder disease, or a history of depression. These unexpected results left the researchers puzzled. No drug or food had ever shown the ability to target and dramatically decrease dangerous organ fat, also known as visceral, or “belly” fat. In fact, only one thing is proven to reduce it… exercise.

And the unsightly bulge of stubborn belly fat isn’t the only problem. Controlling this fat is important, say researchers at Duke University Medical Center, because increased levels have been associated with diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and the alarming rise in obesity rates in the United States, where presently two out of three adults are overweight or obese. Visceral fat is located around the organs inside the belly and is deeper in the body than ordinary fat, and much harder to get rid of.
In the Japanese study, conducted at the Nippon Sport Science University graduate school, lab rats were fed a chemical extract from apples as 5% of their diet. The animals lost an average of 27% of organ fat in only 3 weeks. Even more baffling to researchers was a 16% increase in muscle strength observed in the test animals.
Proven Health Results from Apple Chemicals
Chemical extracts from apples have been extensively studied for years for their health benefits in cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and other chronic diseases. Recently, apple extracts have been shown to protect the brain against nerve damage associated with Alzheimer’s Disease. But this is the first evidence that these phytochemicals- termed apple polyphenols- have been shown to reduce belly fat deposits.
The Japanese researchers have now turned their attention to confirming these results in human subjects, and one Japanese company announced plans to market health drinks containing the extract in the U.S. later this year.
Too Early to Tell?
Although it will likely be some time before human weight loss trials are reported, some consumers aren’t willing to wait. Smoking and Sleeping
I’ll come clean: I smoke. I know, I know, it’s a bad habit, and I’m the process of quitting. But, I like having a cigar with my dad on special occasions, and after writing for hours, a cigarette break can be exactly what I need. Besides, I smoke cloves, which unlike regular cigarettes, actually smell and taste good.
But I do realize the health risks of smoking: increased heart disease, lung cancer, and emphysema, plus a whole lot more. Here’s the thing, though. I’m young. I just turned 23. At this age, it’s easy to write those things off; even if they do happen, it won’t be for another 15, 20, 30+ years.
So why am I quitting? I’ll get to the point: smoking and sleeping don’t mix. It took me a while to figure it out, but after smoking a lot and not sleeping, I began to put two and two together. The problem is nicotine is a stimulant; it will keep you up. You wouldn’t drink coffee or a coke before trying to go to bed, so why smoke? I guess if cravings were making you jittery and keeping you up, it might make sense, but that just brings me to my next point.
Nicotine is extremely addicting, and like any addictive substance, heavy users start experiencing withdrawal as soon as that last cigarette is snubbed out. In fact, heavy smokers probably won’t be able to sleep much more than 4 to 6 hours because of withdrawal symptoms.
In short, nicotine affects sleep: you get worse sleep, and less sleep when you smoke.
I’m not writing this to try and make anyone quit, or to say that smoking is bad. You’re an adult, you can make your own decisions, and you don’t need me telling you what to do.
My goal is to educate; if you smoke and can’t sleep, maybe it’s time to think about cutting back or quitting all together. If you’re in the process of quitting, congratulations. Perhaps we can quit together.
Sleeping is good, and you deserve to sleep better and longer.

My background
My name is Steve Hill and I struggled to keep my weight under control for the first twenty-two years of my life. I was often teased at school and found it very hard to meet girls as I believed that there would be no way, that they would want to date somebody as fat as myself.
I was a very negative person and I frequently felt stressed and depressed. I often felt sorry for myself and would feel envious of other people who seemed fit, healthy and happy. During these periods of depression, I would often comfort eat to make myself feel better. I love food and this would temporarily help. The problem I found was that if I ate food for ten minutes, I would feel a sense of guilt for around two hours.
Like many people who are over-weight, I was not happy this way and often looked into different types of weight loss plan or diets. Maybe it is just me, but they seem so unrealistic and for somebody like myself impossible to follow. I needed a simple, easy to follow weight loss program.
The solution to my weight problem
The first thing I had to do was to be honest with myself. I asked myself a series of questions:
Why are you over-weight?
I do not eat the right types of food and I rarely exercise.
How determined are you to lose weight?
Very determined.
Are you willing for this to be a long term project, or are you looking for a quick fix?
The quicker the better, however I realise that crash diets do not work and end up causing more harm than good.
Do you feel you have enough self-discipline to succeed?
I am not sure but I will have to have, to reach my target weight.
The weight loss plan
These are the things I must do:
Eat three healthy meals a day.
Exercise more. This will be achieved by leaving the car at home more often and by walking to certain places, such as my children’s school. I will also take the children to play sports like football and tennis, as often as I can.
Fight the demons in my head who constantly tempt me into eating.
These are the things I must not do:
Snack in between meals.
Eat too many take-aways, I will basically allow myself one a week.
Lie to other people or even myself about what I have eaten.
This sounds so simple and is very easy to follow. I have to admit that it is not that easy to carry off, especially not being able to snack between meals. With determination you can succeed and the sense of happiness and pride you will feel when you reach a weight you are happy with, will make it all worthwhile. read more
